English Summary/英文概要: Set against a backdrop of the Detroit riots of the late Sixties, Motown’s move to L.A., and a car-obsessed culture, Bridgett Davis’ debut novel follows Rae Dodson as she grows up in the divided home of her troubled parents. Her beautiful mother longs for her older lover and first child down in New Orleans, and her father fails to make his own grab at happiness in order to be there for Rae. The almost claustrophobically close, yet sustaining relationship between Rae and her father JD is the novel’s through-line; but the tale returns again and again to the summer when Rae is nine and her mysterious sister Kimmie comes home to live with them, and a chance to make the family whole ends in tragedy. Bridgett Davis is an Associate Professor in the English Department of Baruch College in Manhattan, and the director of the film “Naked Acts”.
